About Sue Cook Miniatures
I was born in London, and came to Brighton to study fine art at Brighton
Art College, ending up with a BA. I fell in love with Brighton, and I'm
still here some twenty years later - it is sunny, cosmopolitan and easy-going
(as close as you can get to San Francisco in England) and the wonderful
vitality of the music scene here enables me to indulge my other passion,
folk music. Of an evening I am often to be found in one or another of
Brighton's many Pubs, making music with my friends.
I
started making dolls houses with Trevor Cook in 1984. Our Doll's houses
were some of the first architecturally correct doll's houses (based originally
on the Regency period and using local Brighton landmarks as reference).
From the first, our work was in great demand. Over a couple of years I
specialised in the mould-making and fine-casting techniques necessary
to render accurate detail on scale architectural items like fireplaces,
coving and ceiling roses. The demand for these items was amazing and so
I concentrated all my time on producing these and increasing the range
- unfortunately this means that I no longer make doll's houses. Flooring,
niches, columns and brackets were added, and today my catalogue contains
over 300 items, with pretty much everything you need to complete room
settings in the Regency, Victorian, Georgian and Gothic styles. My personal
favourite theme is gardens, and as a result have been adding garden items
to my range.
As
the business grew I moved production out of the house and into a large
sunny workshop, which I was very lucky to find. I'm still there, and still
hand casting from my own moulds and patterns!
As an experienced pattern maker I am often asked to produce bespoke moulds
or finished items. I have also been mastering for metal casting companies.
The work that has given me most pleasure is the Avoloteshekevara Buddah,
made for a Buddhist group. I am happy to take on such commissions - just
get in touch for an estimate.
